What does (not set) mean in GA4?
(not set) means GA4 had no value for that dimension. The common causes for landing pages, sources, countries and cities, and when it's worth fixing.
(not set) in Google Analytics 4 means GA4 had no value for that dimension for some of your data. It isn't an error on its own: a small share is normal. A large share usually points to a tagging problem worth fixing.
Common places you'll see it
| Where | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| Landing page | The session had no page view: it started with another event, or the tag fired after the visitor left |
| Session source / medium | Events sent without a session start (for example from a server), or a tag that loads late |
| Country or city | Google couldn't place the visitor's network |
| Page title | The page has no <title>, or the event had none |
| Campaign | No UTM campaign tag (normal for untagged visits) |
When to fix it
- Under a few percent: usually normal. Leave it.
- A large share of landing pages: make sure the Google tag runs on page load, in the
<head>, on every page. - Lots of sources: check you're not sending events from a server without a session, and that your consent banner doesn't block the tag until after the first events.
In SimpleDash
SimpleDash shows (not set) in plain words: Unknown for browsers, systems and channels, and as one "Unknown" row for cities Google couldn't place, without a made-up location.

Data thresholds
