How to exclude your own visits from Google Analytics 4
Stop GA4 counting you and your team: define internal traffic by IP address, then turn the internal traffic filter from Testing to Active. With checks.
To stop Google Analytics 4 counting your own visits, define your IP address as internal traffic in your data stream's tag settings, then turn GA4's Internal Traffic filter from Testing to Active. It matters most on small sites, where your own visits can be a big share of the total.
1. Find your IP address
Search "what is my IP" in Google, or ask your network admin for your office's address. Home connections often change their IP from time to time, so note when you set it.
2. Define internal traffic
In GA4, open Admin → Data collection and modification → Data streams, and choose your web stream.
Under Google tag, choose Configure tag settings, then Show more and Define internal traffic.
Choose Create. Name the rule (for example "Home"), keep traffic_type as internal, and add IP address equals your IP. You can add several addresses or ranges.
Create to save.
3. Turn the filter on
The rule only labels your visits. To exclude them:
- Admin → Data collection and modification → Data filters.
- Open Internal Traffic and change its state from Testing to Active, then save.
Once active, the filter is permanent for new data: excluded visits can't be brought back. Testing first lets you check it matches the right visits.
Check it works
While the filter is in Testing, open Reports → Realtime and add a comparison on Test data filter name to see your own visits labelled. Once active, your visits stop appearing in Realtime.
Changing IP addresses
If your IP changes often, also exclude yourself with a browser extension that blocks Google Analytics on your own site, or keep the filter's rule updated. Don't rely on just one method.
