How to see ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude traffic in GA4
Find visitors from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot in Google Analytics 4, build an AI channel that groups them, and know what GA4 can't see.
Visits from AI assistants show up in Google Analytics 4 as referrals from their websites, such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and claude.ai. GA4 also groups many of them under an AI Assistant channel. To see them all in one place, filter Traffic acquisition by source, or create a custom channel group with a short rule.
Quick look: filter by source
Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
Change the table's first column to Session source (the dropdown above the first column).
In the table's search box, type chatgpt, then perplexity, claude, gemini and copilot one at a time.
The sources to look for
| Assistant | Source in GA4 |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | chatgpt.com, older visits chat.openai.com |
| Perplexity | perplexity.ai, www.perplexity.ai |
| Claude | claude.ai |
| Gemini | gemini.google.com (older: bard.google.com) |
| Copilot | copilot.microsoft.com |
| DeepSeek, Grok, Meta AI | chat.deepseek.com, grok.com, meta.ai |
| Others | chat.mistral.ai, you.com, phind.com, poe.com |
ChatGPT also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many links it shows, so those visits show chatgpt.com as their source even when the browser doesn't pass a referrer.
See them all at once: an AI channel group
GA4's default channels include AI Assistant for many of these. To make sure all of them are grouped, including newer assistants, create your own channel group:
Admin → Data display → Channel groups → Create new channel group. Name it, for example, "Channels with AI".
Choose Add new channel, name it "AI assistants", and add the condition Source · matches regex ·
chatgpt|openai|perplexity|claude|gemini|bard|copilot|deepseek|grok|meta\.ai|mistral|you\.com|phind|poe\.comSave, then use Reorder to move "AI assistants" above Referral, or GA4 sorts these visits into Referral first.
In Traffic acquisition, switch the first column to your new channel group.
What GA4 can't see
- Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode count as Google organic search. Google doesn't report them separately in GA4; their clicks are in Search Console's performance report, together with other Google results.
- Apps that hide the referrer. Some visits from AI apps arrive without a referrer and show up as Direct. Why direct traffic is high.
- Answers without a click. If an assistant mentions your site but nobody clicks, there's no visit to count.

Direct traffic
Direct traffic means GA4 couldn't tell where a visit came from. The common causes, from apps and emails to your own visits, and what you can actually fix.
