What is MRR, and how is it worked out from Stripe?
MRR is monthly recurring revenue: what your active subscriptions bring in each month. How it's calculated, what to leave out, and where to see it in Stripe.
MRR (monthly recurring revenue) is how much your active subscriptions bring in each month. Add up every active subscription's price as a monthly amount: a $20 monthly plan counts $20, and a $240 yearly plan also counts $20 ($240 ÷ 12). One-off payments don't count.
How to calculate it
- Take every active subscription.
- Turn each price into a monthly amount: yearly ÷ 12, quarterly ÷ 3, weekly × 52 ÷ 12.
- Multiply by quantity (for per-seat plans) and add them up.
Example: 40 customers on a $20 monthly plan and 10 on a $240 yearly plan: 40 × $20 + 10 × ($240 ÷ 12) = $800 + $200 = $1,000 MRR.
What to include, and what not
| Include | Leave out |
|---|---|
| Active subscriptions | One-off payments and setup fees |
| Subscriptions in a payment retry (past due), if you expect them to recover | Cancelled subscriptions |
| Usage-based charges you can't predict | |
| Taxes |
Discounts are a choice: some count the list price, some the discounted price. Pick one and stay consistent.
MRR vs revenue
Revenue is money that came in during a period, including one-off payments, minus refunds. MRR is a snapshot of what's recurring right now. A yearly plan brings in its full price on one day, but only 1/12 of it counts towards MRR.
Where to see it in Stripe
Stripe's Billing overview shows MRR and subscription numbers for your account, calculated its own way. Small differences from your own calculation usually come from discounts, past-due subscriptions or currency conversion.
