What is direct traffic in GA4, and why is mine so high?
Direct traffic means GA4 couldn't tell where a visit came from. The common causes, from apps and emails to your own visits, and what you can actually fix.
"Direct" in Google Analytics 4 means GA4 couldn't tell where a visit came from. Some of it is real (people typing your address or using a bookmark), but a lot is visits from apps, emails and documents that don't pass on where the click happened. You can't make it zero, but tagged links and a few settings bring it down.
What GA4 counts as direct
A visit is Direct (source (direct), medium (none)) when the browser sends no referrer and the link has no UTM tags. That happens when someone:
- types your address or uses a bookmark or the browser's autocomplete
- clicks a link in an app that hides the referrer: WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, Telegram, many email apps, some AI assistant apps
- clicks a link in a PDF, a Word document or a desktop app
- follows a redirect that drops the referrer
- comes from an
httpspage to anhttppage
Common reasons it's high on small sites
- Your own visits. On a small site, you and your team can be a big share. Exclude internal traffic.
- Newsletters and messages. Links in emails and chats often arrive without a referrer. Tag them with UTM links.
- Shared links. When your link spreads in group chats, it shows as direct.
- New tracking. In the first days after adding GA4, returning visitors with bookmarks make direct look big.
What you can fix
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Your own visits | Define internal traffic and turn the filter on |
| Emails, newsletters, ads, links you share | Add UTM tags |
| Payment pages taking over visits | List unwanted referrals |
| Redirects dropping the referrer | Link straight to the final address |
What you can't fix: people who type your address, and apps that hide where a click came from. That part of direct is normal, and often a good sign (people remember your name).
Is "Direct" bad?
Not on its own. A growing direct share can mean people remember your site. It's a problem only when it hides a source you care about, like a newsletter you'd want to measure.
