How to find searches you're almost on page 1 for
Use Google Search Console to find searches where your pages rank around positions 8 to 15, then improve those pages to move onto page 1. Step by step.
Searches where your pages rank around positions 8 to 15 sit at the bottom of page 1 or the top of page 2, and are the cheapest wins in SEO. In Search Console, filter the Performance report to those positions, sort by impressions, and improve the page that ranks for each one.
Find them in Search Console
Open Search Console → Performance → Search results, and choose the last 3 months.
Tick Average position and Impressions at the top.
In the Queries table, use the filter icon to add Position is greater than 7.5, and another filter for Position is smaller than 15.5.
Sort by Impressions, highest first. Searches that many people make, where you're almost on page 1, are at the top.
Click a search, then the Pages tab, to see which page ranks for it.
Improve each page
For each search, open the page that ranks and check:
- Does the page answer that search directly? Add a short, clear answer near the top, or a section with the search as its heading.
- Is the search in the title? Put the main words in the page's title and H1, naturally.
- Do other pages link to it? Add links from related pages on your site, with words that describe it.
- Is it up to date? Refresh old facts and screenshots.
Change one page at a time and give it two to four weeks: rankings move slowly.
Pick the right searches
Skip searches that don't fit your page or your product, even with many impressions. A search that matches what you offer is worth more than a bigger one that doesn't.
